Obituary
George P. Sealy
Leader in technology development; 78
George P. Sealy, an engineer and investor who was an early leader in the development of communications and medical technologies to substantially improve quality of life, died December 30 at The Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, CA. He was 78.
The cause was system failure from advanced cancer, said daughter, Kathy Kemper.
In the 1970s, as a Vice President at Bechtel International Corporation, Mr. Sealy championed investments in digital communication technologies that led to substantially improved service and lower costs. Mr. Sealy helped start MCI Corporation which is one of the largest and most innovative communication companies in the world.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Mr. Sealy served in ownership, senior management and financing roles in a number of companies such as Riddell, Inc., the sports equipment (football helmets) manufacturer. These companies ranged from construction engineering and services to technology development and innovation.
Throughout his distinguished life he remained committed to public service. He served on the Library of Congress Madison Council and the Board of the Institute for Education. He was an Inaugural Advisory Board Member for the UCSD Cardiovascular Center. George derived great joy from his membership and Campmates in Wayside Log and the Bohemian Club.
One of his proudest achievements in public service was serving as the President of the governing board of Ranch Santa Fe. George loved the community of Rancho Santa Fe and its historic Golf Course. He devoted a great deal of his time to protecting and enhancing the unique character and quality of life in Rancho Santa Fe. Having served on the Community's governing board from 1997 to 2000 George took an active role in plotting a course for the community's future. George took great pride in the fact that Rancho Santa Fe was named as the most desirable community in the nation while he was serving as President in 2000.
Even as George was battling cancer, he was instrumental in the founding and operation of Tri Alpha Energy Corporation which he fervently believed would solve the world's need for clean, safe and affordable energy. In addition, TAE's technology, developed in cooperation with University of California Irvine, could potentially assist in cleaning and restoring the Earth's environment.
George Paul Sealy was born in Cleveland, OH, on October 14, 1926. Following service in the US Navy during WWII, he received his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame in 1948 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1951. George was a devout Catholic all his life with a strong and enduring personal faith that underpinned his approach to life and others.
George was devoted to his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Joan and five children, Mike Sealy, Dave Sealy, Mike Kemper, Kathy Kemper and Bo Kemper as well as four daughters-in-law and one son-in-law. He is also survived by his sisters, Rachael Zvolensky and Mary Sealy, and brother, Joseph Sealy. Finally and foremost, he leaves a legacy of 21 grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 12.00pm for George on January 7, 2005 at The Church of the Nativity in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. The family has requested that no flowers or gifts be sent. Any donations should be made to the UCSD Cardiovascular Center (on behalf of George P. Sealy): 200 W. Arbor Drive, 8411, San Diego, CA 92103.
