USGS selects RemoteView for Disaster and Hazard Response software
Sterling, VA, December 18, 2000 - Sensor Systems, the leading provider of large image exploitation and analysis software that bridges the gap between imagery and geographic information systems (GIS), announced today that the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Reston, VA has selected Sensor Systems' RemoteView Professional image exploitation and analysis software to produce maps for disaster and hazard response.
RemoteView was selected by the USGS because of the speed and quality with which it handles very large, uncompressed image files. RemoteView's speed will allow the USGS to quickly navigate through very large, high-resolution image files directly to the area affected by natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes, volcanoes, wildfires and earthquakes. The ability to work without compression gives the USGS the assurance that even small, subtle features will not be missed or mistakenly thrown out. The GIS tools within RemoteView will also allow the USGS to accurately determine the extent and precise geo-location of the area affected and use the resulting vector layers together with USGS legacy vector databases in ESRI™ Shape file format. The use of RemoteView will allow the USGS to streamline and accelerate the initial damage assessment, thereby speeding the allocation and delivery of relief resources to the affected area. This application by the USGS is a perfect example of applying new RemoteView software tools specifically designed to take advantage of the much higher information density of high-resolution, digital imagery now becoming available for even commercial applications.
The USGS is the US federal agency that provides reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
