Sensor Systems Announces Release 2.12 of RemoteView-Pro
with Graphical Situation Display (GSD)

Sterling, VA, October 1, 1999 - Sensor Systems announced today the release of RemoteView-Pro Version 2.12 with enhanced Graphical Situation Display (GSD) capabilities. The GSD tool in RemoteView is a highly integrated interface to a comprehensive library of Military Standard (MIL-STD) 2525A symbols. Using RemoteView-Pro 2.12, important military operational information such as the forward line of troop movements, the type, location and numbers of combat equipment, troop estimates and even weather phenomena can be displayed as symbols and text, and registered to satellite images. The combination of RemoteView-Pro's user interface and the more than 1200 symbols in the GSD library, enable the user to rapidly create thousands of data combinations using graphics and text. Once developed, these GSD layers can be saved or transmitted for use with other images, maps, or other graphical products.

The GSD standard was developed to solve a real life military problem. After action reports and interviews from Desert Shield/Desert Storm showed conclusively that tactical commanders needed a concise graphical representation of the battlefield. At that time voluminous amounts of battle information available in text form had to be read, interpreted and translated onto a graphical display - typically a combination of simple computer displays and acetate covered maps. Because each branch of service used different symbols, the joint battlefield picture was confusing, difficult to develop, and, when stored on computer, resulted in large files that could not be easily stored, retrieved or transmitted. In 1994 the Department of Defense took the first major step toward correcting this problem with the GSD, MIL-STD-2525A standard. RemoteView-Pro 2.12 is the first comprehensive visualization application to fully implement GSD as a combat operations support tool.

The RemoteView-Pro 2.12 GSD interface is easy to use, and delivers a wealth of detailed information that can be displayed and edited by the user to meet a variety of requirements.  A primary key to RemoteView-Pro's ease of use is the implementation of the GSD Symbol Palette. The Symbol Palette groups symbols by hierarchical categories, and uses simple pull down menu trees to find and select the appropriate symbol. Additionally, users can build tailored "favorites" palettes to meet any number of operational needs.

RemoteView-Pro 2.12 GSD also "gets the word out" using Graphical Reporting (GraphRep) reporting methods. Through standard GraphRep reporting, GSD symbols and their associated data can be used to quickly disseminate critical battlefield situations in joint force operations.  Because RemoteView-Pro 2.1.2 GSD information is geoencoded, symbols and data can be transmitted via GraphRep using relatively small files that can be applied to local imagery or digital maps in the correct location.  Sending the "needle not the haystack" directly supports combat effectiveness and highlights Sensor Systems' commitment to product improvements that are most important to military commanders.

"RemoteView-Pro and the incorporation of GSD bring a powerful new tool to military planners and warfighters," said Kirk Brown, President of Sensor Systems. "This tool combines the power of high-resolution imagery with a rich and detailed standard for communicating information across the military services. The ability to send the smallest possible file containing extensive information and to apply it in graphical form to images, maps, or other displays, ensures the delivery of critical combat information where it is needed, when it is needed."

RemoteView from Sensor Systems is the industry's leading application for the exploitation of large-scale digital imagery from sources such as high-resolution remote sensing satellites and aerial systems. RemoteView provides an impressive array of features to extract maximum available data and utility from digital images and image products such as vector based map files. RemoteView-Pro's user interface is streamlined and efficient providing optimal user workflow and productivity, seamlessly allowing users to roam over gigabyte-sized images using industry standard UNIX and NT workstations.

RemoteView products have been specially tuned to take maximum advantage of the new generation of commercial one-meter satellites such as Space Imaging's IKONOS, EarthWatch's QuickBird and OrbImage's OrbView-3. One-meter satellite imagery promises to usher in a new era in geographic information systems (GIS), mapping, environmental monitoring, agriculture, urban planning, land use and development, and disaster planning and recovery.

Sensor Systems is a leading developer of desktop applications for visualization and analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery. The RemoteView product family provides solutions ranging from simple desktop viewers to sophisticated mapping, cartography and geodesy applications running on UNIX and NT platforms. Current users include government and commercial organizations around the world.
